Dry and itchy skin can be frustrating, especially when it’s difficult to indicate why. The human body is almost 70% water so it may seem counterintuitive. After all, wet is the opposite of dry! In fact, too much exposure to water like long hot showers and baths strip away the skin’s natural oils, which leads to…you guessed it, DRY SKIN ☹

Its general cause is lack of moisture, however, other factors such as weather and exposure to chemicals can play a part. Cold, dry air (air conditioning, cool climates/ winter) can suck the moisture out of your skin and intense heat (hot baths/showers, warm climates/summer) can not only damage the deeper epidermis but also cause peeling and dry patches. Exposure to chemicals like chlorine for example can affect swimmers.

In addition, as we are washing and sanitizing our hands more due to the protection against the COVID-19 pandemic, our skin becomes more irritated and stripped from its natural oils.
